In this literature and vocabulary-based class, students will explore the founding myth of Roman civilization and the everyday lives of Roman citizens. Reading a simplified version of the Aeneid and novels set in the later years of the Roman empire, students will gain understanding of Roman culture, daily life, and society. Our class will also introduce and review fundamental Latin vocabulary and grammar concepts. Students will independently read and discuss Latin novellas of varying complexity with their classmates, and the course will include vocabulary games and other collaborative activities. Students will have the option to take the National Mythology Exam, Level 2 as part of this class.
This class does not have prerequisites and is appropriate for both beginning Latin students and those who have taken previous Latin courses, due to its individualized approach via independent reading. The class is appropriate for students in grades 5–9.

- The Roman Britain Triology, Rosemary Sutcliff. Contains three novels in one volume: The Eagle of the Ninth, The Silver Branch, and The Lantern Bearers. Each book may also be purchased separately. ISBN-13: 978-0192789983.
- Three-ring binder with lined paper, pencils, colored pencils, and erasers in a pencil pouch. Students will receive weekly handouts that should be kept in a designated section of their binders.
