Wading Deeper into Beauty and Truth
In middle and high school, students hone foundational intellectual and moral habits through BHSC’s university schedule of core academic and enrichment classes. Upper school students are invited to begin to grow into maturity as Christian scholars as they encounter vital ideas, delve deeper into wonder, and develop camaraderie in the shared pursuit of goodness, truth, and beauty. Through collaboration with peers and mentorship from professional teachers, students make connections across disciplines and tackle challenging course content in community. BHSC’s wide variety of classes offer both depth and breadth. Core academic classes challenge students to meet or exceed college prep standards, and enrichment classes offer a panorama for the imagination.
All BHSC instructors are vetted, professional, and experienced classroom teachers who are eager to create a delightful learning environment where students thrive. Parents choose from full-program enrollment options or select classes a la carte to best suit their family’s needs. Several classes are tuition-free!

College-Prep Mathematics
At BHSC the study of math is rooted in wonder. Students are invited to delve deeply into the beauty of math and to undertake mathematical study as an act of worship in which they can behold the order and awesomeness of the cosmos and catch a glimpse into the mind of God. On that foundation, BHSC middle and high school math classes meet or exceed national standards and prepare students for standardized tests, college, and beyond. Starting with Pre-algebra and continuing through Calculus, BHSC math classes meet twice a week, and students should plan to spend a substantial amount of time completing homework between class sessions.
BHSC Mathematics textbooks provide comprehensive coverage of each area, and instructors supplement the curriculum with practice SAT test questions and challenging problem solving activities designed to help students hone their mathematical and critical thinking skills: (Click the links for course descriptions.)
- Pre-algebra
- Algebra 1
- Geometry
- Algebra 2
- Precalculus
- NEW in 2022-2023! Calculus
Since 2012, lab physicist and math coach Mary (Marina) Panam has helped hundreds of students excel on the SAT math test and succeed in college-prep math courses. AS BHSC high school math instructor, Mrs. Panam offers rigorous, top-notch math instruction for BHSC students. Read her full bio here.
Accelerated Science
BHSC primarily uses the Novare series of science textbooks for middle and high school because it combines up-to-date science with a Christian worldview and an educational approach that aims for wonder, integration, and mastery. The Novare curriculum aims to nurture fascinated students who deeply understand and remember their science. In particular, BHSC follows Novare’s accelerated pathway for high school.
For middle school Life Science, BHSC uses Exploring the World of Biology, from John Hudson Tiner. The curriculum harmonizes with our gentle, Charlotte Mason, nature study approach while offering substantive coverage of the subject at an age-appropriate level.
BHSC offers the following classes in rotation (rather than all at once every year): (Click the links for course descriptions of classes offered in the 2022–23 academic year.)
- Life Science (for 5th–8th grades)
- Earth Science (for middle school)
- Physical Science (for middle school)
- Accelerated Studies in Physics and Chemistry (for students who have completed Algebra 1)
- General Biology (for high school)
- Chemistry for Accelerated Students (for students concurrently enrolled in Algebra 2 or higher)
- Physics: Modeling Nature (for students who have completed Trigonometry)
For the 2022–23 academic year, BHSC is offering Life Science, Physical Science, Earth Science, General Biology, and Honors Chemistry (Chemistry for Accelerated Students).
We are especially excited about Honors Chemistry, an ideal class for students who love science and aspire to a STEM-oriented college program. This accelerated class will go beyond standard Chemistry with substantial, college-prep lab work and a textbook that includes chapters on thermochemistry, chemical equilibrium, and a glimpse into organic chemistry.
Chemistry teacher, Deborah Whaley, is an honors graduate of Texas A&M University with a B.S. in Biomedical Science and a Secondary Science Composite Teaching Certification. She has taught highschool science—including Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, and the International Baccalaureate Physics program—for several years in both public school and homeschool class settings.
