In Public Speaking class, students develop the necessary skills to be effective oral communicators. Throughout the year, they write and deliver five speeches oriented toward different occasions and goals. In class, they learn about different kinds of speeches and how best to organize them, as well as theory and techniques for speaking. Students also regularly deliver memorized poems and short extemporaneous speeches. Students will learn about the basics of Lincoln-Douglas debate and prepare cases for debate in class.
Students learn about and put into practice key speaking skills of poise, locution, connection with the audience, and producing cogent content. Students develop confidence and leadership skills that will prepare them to serve God in a variety of contexts.
Materials:
Parents will need to provide the following supplies for the 2026–2027 school year:
- Intro to Public Speaking, IEW
- a notebook, or a section of a multi-subject notebook dedicated to Public Speaking
- paper and pencils
- index cards
Students will need access to a computer and Google Classroom at home and may be required to watch assigned videos on occasion.
