Mrs. Kathleen Shumate
Instructor of Science & Public Speaking
Kathleen has been married to her best friend for 17 years and is the delighted mother of 7 children. She has homeschooled her children for the past 10 years. She graduated from Rice University, worked at NASA and UTMB, and has won international awards for science research. She assists with the newly-minted West Houston Homeschool Science Olympiad Team and has been delighted for the team to bring home multiple medals.
She graduated with a master’s degree in counseling from Covenant Theological
Seminary and has counseled in a variety of contexts, including a shelter for homeless pregnant girls. She is an experienced teacher, writer, and speaker, with 20 years of experience in ministry and missions, both in the U.S. and Asia. She has written and spoken about parenting, missions, and issues of abuse within the church and families. Her writing has been published at Desiring God, Huffington Post, and numerous missions and creative blogs.
After attending seminary, she and her husband and family lived as missionaries in
Taiwan, teaching and ministering at a Christian liberal arts college: the only one of its kind in the Chinese-speaking world. Eventually they returned to the States and started marriage and family ministry CrossLife. She has served in multiple homeschool community roles, including directing 3 musicals/plays (The Sound of Music, Wind in the Willows, and Beauty and the Beast). She published a book for families, The Story of Salvation, which expounds 12 passages of Scripture in multimedia, helping children and adults to understand the Biblical arc of Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration.
Kathleen loves hours of deep conversation with her husband and friends (and,
increasingly, her older children!), snuggling and laughing with her family, taking walks in the woods and exercising, and reading books that reveal what it means to be human. She also paints landscapes, rock climbs, and dances ballet when she can!
