
Mrs. Kathleen Shumate
Instructor of Science & Public Speaking
Kathleen Shumate graduated from Rice University and Covenant Theological Seminary. She worked for NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the University of Texas Medical Branch, won international awards for science research, and has a minor planet named after her. She has a master’s degree in counseling and has counseled in a variety of contexts, including a shelter for homeless pregnant girls.
She has 20 years of experience in ministry and missions, both in the U.S. and in Asia, including Taiwan and India. Kathleen and her husband and family lived as missionaries in Taiwan, teaching and ministering at a Christian liberal arts college. She has written and spoken about parenting, missions, and issues of abuse within the church and families, and co-founded a nonprofit marriage and family ministry. She has published a theology book for families and her writing has been featured in many publications. She has also directed multiple musicals and plays.
Kathleen has been married to her best friend for 18 years, and has homeschooled her 7 children for the past 11 years. She loves hours of deep conversation with her husband, kids, and friends, snuggling and laughing with her family, taking walks in the woods, exercising, and reading books that reveal what it means to be human. She also writes and paints landscapes when she has time!
